Asking for a friend

In my MFA degree project, I am working with youth’s experiences with the youth health centers (ungdomsmottagning) in Sweden. This thesis explores the stigmas and taboos surrounding youth health centers and how this might be hindering young people to visit youth health centers. Iv’e been exploring how this can be challenged, how the threshold can be lowered and how to involve the informal support system and bring the youth health center to the youth arena. The solution allows for a more informal type of support and guidance.

What if we could design for youth to feel more comfortable seeking help for problems that are stigmatised and taboo to talk about today?

An ambassadorship program

Ungdomsmottagningen Snacka is a new ambassadorship, aimed to include youth workers, already part of the youth’s lives, that will empower youth to feel more comfortable to seek help when in need. It is set up to reach young people in new ways, in an informal manner to bring the solution to the youth and to create a more comfortable space for them to open up within. The concept also includes a platform aiding the bridging three different stakeholders, ambassadors, youth, and the youth health center.

Active and Passive Ambassadorship

The ambassadors, that could be the local sports coach or social activity leader, acts as a guide to help. It can be by actively having conversations with the youth or by spreading the work of the work the youth health center does and that this is a good safe place to turn when in need. The already established relationship between ambassador and youth is kept natural to create an open and relaxed environment without any requirements.

Humanize healthcare

Part of this is also a service for youth to effortlessly get in contact with the youth health center and to create personal connections to its personnel through link cards and video presentations. These connections are there to prepare the youth and to lower the bar of contact by building trust and humanize the help-seeking process by making it clear that they are not trying to contact an institution, but a person.
